In his May/June 2025 column for Latino Leaders, Ralph de la Vega reflects on the enduring power of peaceful protest, drawing on the examples of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi. Both leaders, he writes, proved that nonviolent resistance, grounded in discipline, dignity, and moral conviction, can move nations and change the course of history without returning hate for hate.

Writing personally, de la Vega considers what their example asks of leaders and citizens today: the courage to stand firm for justice, the restraint to protest without violence, and the patience to persuade rather than overpower. Lasting change, he argues, is built on principle and peaceful resolve, not anger, and the discipline modeled by King and Gandhi remains as relevant now as it has ever been.
