Our Greatest Strength Has Always Been Our Ideals
In his May/June 2026 column for Latino Leaders, Ralph de la Vega marks the nation’s 250th birthday by arguing that America’s greatest resource has never been its land, its rivers or its mountains, but its ideals. Every American has a story, he writes, and what binds the country together is not where each journey began but a shared belief in the principles that define it: freedom protected by the Constitution, rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights, opportunity made possible by the rule of law, and the conviction that where you begin in life does not determine where you can end.
Writing as someone who arrived alone at the age of ten and went on to lead operations in more than 100 countries as Vice Chairman of AT&T, de la Vega draws on that vantage point to explain why the rule of law is one of America’s great competitive advantages, why the Founders built for durable principles rather than perfection, and why belief alone is not enough. Each generation, he argues, has to actively defend those principles by engaging respectfully with one another, rejecting division, and holding both themselves and their leaders accountable to the Constitution.
